If you're not sure hypnotherapy is real — you're not alone. Most people who've tried it felt the same way before their first session.

Your mind won’t switch off. The same thoughts loop. The same feelings come back. Hypnotherapy works where the loop actually starts.

Most of what drives our feelings, habits, and behaviour doesn’t live in the part of the mind we can consciously access. It lives in the subconscious — in patterns, associations, and beliefs formed through experience, often early in life.
Talking about those patterns can help you understand them. But understanding them doesn’t always change them.
Hypnotherapy works differently. By guiding you into a deeply relaxed state, it quiets the conscious mind and allows us to work directly with the subconscious — where change actually happens. Gently. Without force. Without needing to relive anything.
I’m Caroline Connor, a certified hypnotherapist based in Moorabbin, Melbourne. I work with clients in person and online across Australia and overseas.

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a form of guided relaxation that creates a focused, receptive state — sometimes called a trance, though it feels nothing like what you might imagine from movies or stage shows.

In this state, your conscious mind — the busy, analytical, critical part — quiets down. Your subconscious becomes more accessible. And that’s where we do the work.

You are not asleep. You are not unconscious. You are not under anyone’s control. Most people describe it as a deeply relaxed, dreamlike state — calm, comfortable, and completely safe. You can speak, move, and come out of it at any moment you choose.

The subconscious mind is estimated to drive around 95% of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours — often without us realising it. Hypnotherapy gives us a way to communicate with it directly, to update outdated patterns and introduce new ones that actually serve you.

Sessions with Caroline are warm, conversational, and entirely tailored to you. There is no script, no generic suggestion tape, and nothing that will surprise you or push you somewhere you don’t want to go.

What Is Hypnotherapy

What might bring someone to a hypnotherapy session?

Hypnotherapy works across a wide range of experiences. You might recognise yourself in some of these:

  • Anxiety and worry that won’t switch off — racing thoughts, tight chest, always waiting for something to go wrong
  • Sleep problems — difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking feeling unrested
  • Habits you haven’t been able to shift — sugar cravings, emotional eating, nail biting, smoking, or other patterns you’d like to change
  • Low confidence or self-doubt — holding yourself back, people pleasing, fear of judgment
  • Emotional responses that feel too big — reacting in ways you don’t like and can’t seem to control
  • Something from the past that’s still affecting the present — an experience, a loss, or a period of your life that hasn’t fully settled
  • Performance pressure — in sport, public speaking, creative work, or business where the mind gets in its own way
  • Stress and burnout — the exhaustion of holding everything together for too long

You don’t need to fit neatly into a category. If something in your life feels stuck, heavy, or off — that’s enough of a reason to explore whether hypnotherapy can help.

Who is hypnotherapy for?

Hypnotherapy works for a wide range of people — and you don’t need to arrive with a diagnosis, a label, or a clear understanding of why you feel the way you do.

It works particularly well for:

  • People who’ve tried talk therapy and feel something is still stuck underneath the words
  • People who overthink, over analyse, and can’t seem to turn their mind off
  • People who want to shift a habit, a pattern, or an automatic response that isn’t serving them
  • People who want a deeply relaxing, non-invasive experience that still creates real change
  • People who are curious but sceptical — you don’t need to believe in it for it to work
  • First-timers who’ve never tried anything like this before — equally as welcome

If you’re wondering whether it’s for you — book a free discovery call and we’ll talk it through. No commitment required.

What to expect in a hypnotherapy session

Before we start

We begin with a conversation. I’ll ask about what you’d like to shift, what’s been going on, and what you’d like to feel differently about. You don’t need to have it perfectly articulated — we’ll figure it out together.

The hypnosis itself

I’ll guide you into a state of deep relaxation using a gentle induction — usually a combination of breathing, imagery, and voice. Most people find this part surprisingly easy and pleasant. You remain aware throughout and in full control.

Once you’re in a relaxed, receptive state, we work with the subconscious — using imagery, suggestion, or your own inner responses — to support the shift you’re looking for.

After the session

Most clients feel a noticeable sense of calm and lightness after a session. Change often continues to unfold over the days and weeks that follow as the subconscious integrates what was worked on. Some shifts are immediate. Others settle gradually.

Sessions are 60–90 minutes. You don’t need to prepare anything. Just come as you are.

What clients say about hypnotherapy with Caroline

Why choose Caroline as your hypnotherapist?

I’m a certified clinical hypnotherapist with 12 years of professional practice and 30 years of personal healing experience. Hypnotherapy is one of the tools I came to through my own journey — and one I use because I’ve seen what it can do.

My clients often tell me they feel safe from the very first session — that something in the room allows them to relax in a way they haven’t been able to elsewhere. I think that comes from the fact that I’m not just trained in this work. I’ve lived it.

I blend hypnotherapy with other methods as needed — including MAP Method™, PSYCH-K®, and EFT Tapping — always following what your nervous system and subconscious actually need in the moment, rather than a fixed formula.

No session is the same. No client is the same. And you will never be pushed into territory you’re not ready for.

Frequently asked questions about hypnotherapy

No — this is the most common misconception about hypnotherapy, almost certainly because of stage hypnosis. In a clinical hypnotherapy session, you remain fully aware and in complete control throughout. You cannot be made to do or say anything you don't want to. You can speak, move, and bring yourself out of the relaxed state at any moment. Caroline's sessions are gentle, safe, and conducted entirely at your pace.

Most people can experience hypnosis to some degree — it simply requires a willingness to relax and follow a gentle guide. You don't need to be particularly susceptible or suggestible. If you've ever been absorbed in a book, lost in a daydream, or found yourself zoning out on a drive, you've already experienced something similar to a light trance state.

This varies. Some people experience significant shifts in a single session — particularly for specific habits or isolated issues. Others find a series of sessions creates deeper and more lasting change across multiple areas. We'll discuss what feels right for your situation in your free discovery call.

They share some similarities — both involve relaxation and a quieting of the busy conscious mind. But hypnotherapy is a directed process with a specific therapeutic goal, guided by a practitioner. Meditation is typically self-directed and more about presence than change. Hypnotherapy tends to create faster, more targeted shifts in specific patterns or beliefs.

Yes — and it works just as well. Caroline works with clients via Zoom across Australia and internationally. You'll need a quiet, comfortable space where you won't be interrupted. Many clients actually find online sessions easier because they can relax in their own environment.

PSYCH-K® and MAP Method™ work while you're fully awake and alert, using specific techniques to shift subconscious beliefs. Hypnotherapy works through a deeply relaxed state. All three reach the subconscious mind — they just take different routes to get there. Caroline will recommend the best approach — or combination of approaches — based on what you're working with.

Burnout can creep up slowly. For some people, it arrives after years of pressure, responsibility, and pushing through. For others, it seems to hit all at once. One day they are coping — or at least they think they are —…

Anxiety can be exhausting.Sometimes it feels obvious — racing thoughts, tight chest, constant worry, trouble sleeping. But sometimes it shows up in quieter ways. You might feel tense all the time. Snappy. Restless. Emotionally overwhelmed. Or just never fully relaxed,…
